CELEBRATING 20 YEARS OF DANCE, PASSION AND PERFORMANCE

JAYKAYS OFFICAL DANCEWEAR

OUR UNIFORM GUIDES

At Jaykays Dance Company, we believe that dressing for success is an important part of a dancer’s training.

Once enrolled, all students are required to wear the official Jaykays uniform for their classes. Wearing the correct dancewear helps our students feel part of the Jaykays team, encourages a positive and focused attitude towards learning, and supports the high standards we promote throughout our school.

We also encourage dancers to arrive neat, tidy and ready to dance. Hair should be securely tied back, with a classical ballet bun preferred where possible. A slicked-back ponytail or French plaits are also suitable, depending on the class.

For the safety and comfort of everyone in the studio, watches and jewellery should be removed before class, and we ask dancers to avoid long acrylic nails.

Taking pride in how we arrive for class is all part of developing good habits as a dancer — and well-presented dancers are always recognised and celebrated at Jaykays.

TAP SHOE

Hack

HACK! You can swap the black laces in your child’s tap shoes for black elastic. This makes it easy for them to slip on and off in class. As the lady says in the video, this is best done with your child’s feet already in the shoe, so you don’t thread it too tight or too loose.

AN IMPORTANT NOTE ABOUT

Ballet Shoes

Ballet shoes should fit like a glove. They will mould to your child’s feet so there should be no excess or sagging fabric. This can make the teacher and/or examiner think they are not stretching their feet fully. Please refrain from buying supermarket ballet shoes, these are intended for dress-up, not for ballet class.

CONVERTIBLE

Pointe Shoes

From Grade 3 the Jaykays teaching team will start to introduce pre-pointe work into ballet class. This will grow into it’s own designated class as students move onto Grade 4 and can be fitted for their first pair of pointe shoes. There is a lot to consider when deciding if a student is ready to go en pointe. They need to have built up the necessary strength in their feet, have a strong core, be resilient, have the dedication to practice, and furthermore the maturity to dance safely.

FINAL TIPS

Hair &

GROOMING

We really do like our dancers to attend class well-groomed, and we would love for their hair to be in a classical ballet bun. We understand that this is not always possible, especially if your child has a 4.30pm class, but a neat slick back pony tail, or French plaits would also be suitable. Well dressed and neatly groomed students will be acknowledged and rewarded. Please avoid wearing watches, jewellery or long acrylic nails.

PANTS & THINGS!

Colourful, patterned, short style pants and knickers really do not look very nice underneath ballet dresses and leotards. Especially for exams and shows. Plain white high cut knickers would be suitable, and you can also buy underwear specifically for dance that is skin coloured (available in a range skin tones) and cut to sit underneath leotards discreetly.

SECOND HAND SHOES

Be careful when buying second hand. Jazz shoes and ballet shoes in particular mould to a foot and therefore become very unique to that individual according to the previous owner’s foot shape. Tap shoes taps can also become worn down with use.

BUYING ONLINE

Be careful when buying new online. There are so many dance brands, and may of them are European or American where the sizing can vary incredibly. Please check the size guides provided carefully.

SUPERMARKET BALLET SHOES

Please refrain from buying supermarket ballet shoes, these are intended for dress-up, not for ballet class.

SIZING CHART

Use the sizing charts below to help you find the right fit for Jaykays branded uniform and general UK dancewear.

Please note that sizing can vary between brands, so we always recommend checking the individual brand’s sizing chart, where available, before placing your order.
